• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Johann Joseph Eugen von Guerard, was born is Vienna, studied art in Italy and Dusseldorf before joining the gold rush to Australia in 1852. After two unsuccessful years in Ballarat he travelled extensively through Australia making many sketches. He later became the first master of painting at the National School of Art, Melbourne and curator of the National Gallery of Victoria.
