  • General note

    A note on the back of frame holding a photograph of Mona, also presented by Mr Rowe, states 'Record in a directory 1844 of T.H. Smart at Mona (the initial should be T.W. - Thomas Ware Smart). The detached building is the picture gallery - it contained a number of famous pictures including "The Market Cart" by Gainsborough, see "Some Houses and Peoples of New South Wales" by G. Nesta Griffiths'.

    Mr Rowe's family were once occupants of Mona, 1885-1905.

  • Signatures / Inscriptions

    Signed 'S P Hi[ll?] 1844' 'Hill' partly erased. Titled on mounting sheet below view in blue ink.

    Note by donor on brown paper backing of frame (frame now discarded) 'Incorporated in Mona standing in 1905 when the then existing picture gallery stables boathouses were demolished and the grounds sub-divided'.
  • Attributions / conjectures

    According to Moore 'The Story of Australian Art', Hill was in Hobart in 1842 and in 1845-46 he was Secretary of the Mechanic's Institute School of Arts, Sydney, so that he could have been painting in N.S.W. at that time when he was 24 years of age.
