  • General note

The identity of the sitter of this portrait may be Robert Scott as suggested by the provenance of the miniature and by the young man's age i.e. 21 in 1820. It is also possible that the sitter is one of Robert's brothers - Alexander Walker (b.1800), Helenus (b.1802), David (b.1804) or his youngest brother Patrick
Attributed to the Misses Sharpes : miniature was exhibited by Rose Scott in the National Art Gallery Loan Exhibition of 1897 when it was said to be by "Miss Sharpe, 1820" ML ref. 042/P84. Two Miss Sharpes - Eliza (1796-1874) and Mary Anne (1802-1867) - were exhibiting in 1820 cf. Daphne Foskett, A Dictionary of British Miniature Painters vol. 1, 1972, p.501-502 GRL ref.EQ 757.7/FOS
This Scott family miniature, and four others (MINs 352, 353, 355 & 356), were acquired from a presumed descendant of Rose Scott (provenance has not been traced). On the reverse of MIN 355 is an exhibition label, [National Art Gallery] Art Loan Exhibition, 1897, in which Miss Rose Scott is said to be the owner of five miniatures displayed in this exhibition - no's. 533-537.
