    Mary Phoebe Broughton was the daughter of William Grant Broughton, first Church of England Bishop of Australia. Born in England, she emigrated with her family to Sydney on board the convict ship, John, arriving on 13 September 1829. In 1844 she married William Barker Boydell and settled with him at 'Caergwrle' on the Allyn River in the Hunter River district.

    1 January 1839-27 August 1841; The diary lists daily events such as places visited, church services attended and visits to and from friends including Lady Gipps and members of the Lethbridge, Macleay and Dowling families.
