  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Melba brought her second opera company to Australia for JC Williamson's in 1924. The great new star ... was Toti Dal Monte, aged 31, fresh from triumphs in Milan and Paris, but not yet seen in London or the USA. After her first Lucia the Argus compared her to "our own great inimitable coloratura [Melba], and one missed the silvery tones, the perfectly balanced phrases, and the magical atmosphere." Dal Monte enchanted audiences, however, and after the tour she remained to give concerts, no doubt on Melba's advice as to their profitability, cancelling her San Francisco debut and a Chicago appearance. -- Reference: Entertaining Australia : an illustrated history / Katharine Brisbane (ed.).
