  • General note

The William Shakespeare collection at the State Library of New South Wales comprises more than 5600 volumes, including the rare First, Second, Third and Fourth Shakespeare Folios. The Library holds the only known copy of Shakespeare's First Folio in Australia. The First Folio, the first collected edition of Shakespeare's plays, was published in 1623. This collection is partly housed in the Library's Shakespeare Tercentenary Memorial Library, commonly known as the Shakespeare Room. The room, completed in 1942 with the central portion of the Mitchell Wing, has its origins in a 1912 meeting, when a number of Sydney citizens discussed a suitable memorial for the 300th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare.

For further information about the Shakespeare Room see: A source of inspiration & delight : the buildings of the State Library of New South Wales since 1826 / David J. Jones. Sydney : Library Council of New South Wales, c1988.
On the upper edge of the poster (Mitchell Library call number ML 1387) and certificate (Mitchell Library call number ML 1386 )is the Garrard trademark and coats-of-arms of HM The Queen, HM The Queen Mother and HRH The Prince of Wales.
