  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Mark John Hammond (1844-1908), gold-miner and parliamentarian, was born at Sydney, son of John Hammond. He went to the goldfields at Braidwood with his father in 1852, later becoming a blacksmith and jockey before striking gold at Hill End with his business partners Beyers and Holtermann. He returned to Sydney in 1873 and was elected an alderman of Ashfield Municipal Council in 1876. He was Mayor of Ashfield in 1882 and retired in 1887. He was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Canterbury (1884-1887). He was a supporter of the Australian Democratic and Liberal Reform League. [ref:ADB 4]
