Dr. H. Martin Doyle (1859-1929), medical practitioner and parliamentarian, was born at Ballan, Victoria. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, Melbourne and in Europe where he studied in Ireland, Paris, and London qualifying as a surgeon in London. Doyle left England in 1889 and worked as medical officer on a coastal ship until 1891 when he was appointed medical superintendant of Newcastle Hospital. Doyle was appointed to the NSW Legislative Council (1912-1929) by the Labor Party but broke with them over the issue of conscription during World War I. - Scope and Content1880-1926; Correspondence and papers including: medical notes and pamphlets; articles and notes concerning the early history of the Catholic Church in Newcastle; miscellaneous newscuttings; parliamentary report (copy) concerning the case of William James Chidley; minutes of the Newcastle and District Federation League, 1897, with newscuttings; printed material and correspondence concerning Margaret Ethel MacDonald (1870-1911), wife of Ramsay MacDonald, 1912-1913; letter press copy book, 1897; correspondence, 1901-1926, correspondents include Sir Hugh Denison, George Black, R.W.
