• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Mary Reibey, baptised Molly Haydock, was born in Bury, Lancashire, England. Convicted of horse-stealing at the age of 13, Mary was sentenced to 7 years transportation to the Colony of New South Wales. In 1794, she Mary married Thomas Raby. Mary became a highly successful business woman and trader. Several variants of the surname were used including Raby, Raiby, and Reiby with Reibey, being the adopted spelling by the family in later years. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography. • Scope and Content
  A watercolour on ivory miniature in oval shaped gold frame that is pinned in four places, has a glass front, two gold loops at centre top, green velvet backing, and stored within a black morocco case. The case is rectangular in shape, lined in green velvet with indentation and metal hook that swivels to release frame. At the back of the case is a hinged recessed stand with a tab for lifting. The lid of the case comprises two pieces, hinged at the sides, that opens at the centre via two buttons set into the right hand panel.
  
  The female in this portrait wears a black dress with a muslin and white work embroidered collar, a cream wool shawl, an indoor cap, and spectacles with silver metal frames. The indoor cap is made of muslin with white work embroidered edging, and muslin ties that are fastened under chin. The cap is also trimmed with pale blue ribbons arranged in bows above each ear and extending below the cap to form tails that have been crossed over at centre front and fastened with a gold brooch.
