  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Andrew Clunie migrated to New South Wales from England in the 1850s. He undertook a number of activities including gold mining, shoemaking and operating a ferry, all apparently unsuccessful. He returned to England in 1865.
  • Scope and Content
This collection comprises eighteen letters written by Andrew Clunie to his sister Mrs M. Randall and one letter to his mother back in England. They are dated between 16 June 1856 and 25 April 1865. Most of the letters were written from South Gundagai; others were written from Goulburn, Sutton Forest, Adelong and Melbourne. The letters tell of the hardships experienced by a poor, unskilled immigrant in colonial NSW during a period of high unemployment with few real opportunities for improvement. In one letter he wrote that 'the country is completely cooked ... men are offering their services for the bare rations.' In another he enclosed a photograph of himself and apologising for the bad likeness, explained that 'the country is overrun with travelling amateur Botching artists.'
