    William Ambrose Cull, an apprentice coachbuilder of Hamilton, Victoria was born in Normanby, Victoria and enlisted in Melbourne aged 20 on 7 May 1915. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A14 Euripides, 10 May 1915 and served with 22nd and 23rd Battalions, 6th Infantry Brigade. He was wounded at Gallipoli, 6 Nov. 1915, recovering in Malta before dispatch to the Western Front. He was severely wounded 26 Feb. 1917, and was prisoner of war in Germany before transfer to Switzerland in 1918. He returned to Australia on Dunluce Castle, Apr. 1918, permanently disabled and wrote a memoir, 'At all costs' which was republished in 2011 in an edited form as 'Both sides of the wire'. He was active in recruitment, a representative of the Repatriation Commission Board and the RSL executive and later became managing editor of the Shepparton Advertiser until ill health forced his retirement. He died 29 July 1939, aged 45.
