  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Stanley Jevons arrived in Sydney in October 1854 to take up a position as assayer at the new Sydney Mint. In his private capacity, he became a pioneer in scientific meteorology, publishing his observations in Sydney newspapers. In 1857 Jevons took up wet-plate photography, producing portraits, interiors and landcapes. In 1858 he undertook a 'social survey' of Sydney. Jevons left Sydney in 1859, returning to England where he went on to publish studies in logic, economics and scientific method.
  • Scope and Content
    Jevons' letters describe Sydney and its surroundings, his work at the Mint and life in the colony. The letters are accompanied by typescript transcriptions of most of the letters.
