The Society asked members to collect information on Aboriginal place names. In about August 1899 the Society circulated copies of a form to the governments of each colony with a request that they be sent to government officials in local areas. The survey asked for 'Name of Place' and 'Meaning or reason why it was given'. Extracts from the lists were published in the Journal from about 1908 to 1913.
  • Scope and Content
This series comprises the completed survey forms about Aboriginal place names which were returned to William Wentworth Bucknell, Honorary General Secretary of the Royal Anthropological Society of Australasia, with associated correspondence.

  • System of arrangement
Box 4: The New South Wales survey forms have been arranged alphabetically by the place or district in which the forms were completed. Some forms were returned to the Society in bundles gathered from different places and held by a split pin (now removed). These have been kept in the order of their original groupings, which means that the alphabetical sequence is sometimes disturbed.
